I had been trying and trying to make star shaped cookies for the 4th of the July. But I just couldn’t get it right. The dough was off, or the cookies were two delicate to transfer, or who knows what. Problem and problem that I tried and tried to fix. Finally, after many attempts, I found a recipe that I THOUGHT would do the trick. (Why, I don’t know why. If I had paid close attention to the directions, I would have seen that no, in fact, these wouldn’t work, because they were going to spread.)
So instead of a star, I have a blob. But, I have one tasty cookie. So, that’s a plus, right?
This is how they looked coming out of the cookie cutter:
And this is what happened when they came out of the oven:
Not EXACTLY what I was going for. But… they did taste delicious. So I made the rest of them in these pretty circles, sprinkled with red and blue for the 4th.
I used THIS RECIPE from Martha Stewart. It’s an old fashioned sugar cookie recipe, and it uses lemon and lemon zest instead of vanilla. It’s my new favorite as far as taste, but I won’t be using it to make cute shapes anytime soon!
I LOVE using lemon zest in things. I never measure it – I always just guess.
And this juicer makes getting fresh lemon juice (at the right measurement!) oh-so-easy:
