DIY and Home Inspiration – Game of Thrones Edition

By Lia

For the last year and a half, I’ve been ranting and raving about how amazing the books and HBO TV series Game of Thrones both are. For the uninitiated, Game of Thrones takes place in a fictional middle ages, and involves several warring families trying to capture the Iron Throne, which is to say, have someone or someone they love be the king. Only in Westeros, (the land where the book takes place), there’s magic, dragons and no end to the means the players in the game of thrones will use to get what they want.  I have never really been a huge fan of fantasy anything, but this series really has something for everyone and I haven’t met a person yet who has picked it up and been physically able to put it down.  And that goes for the TV show as well. For the first time in my life, I don’t want to read ahead in the books because it will ruin the TV show. And that has NEVER happened to me, ever.  It goes to show just how good it is.

For those who already know and love the show and/or books…well, just skip to the pretty pictures below :)

One of the coolest things I’ve seen pop up thanks to the rising popularity of the series, are blogs and Etsy shops inspired by the characters, the lands and the unique mottoes and sigils of the families.  Below are a few of my favorites – both blogs and products – I’ve spied from around the Web.

Blogs:

What Would Khaleesi Wear is actually one of my favorite sites. It’s a Tumblr (which has inspired other Tumblr’s such as What Would Cersei Wear, What Would Sansa Wear, etc.) and basically finds amazing dresses, jewelry and shoes from around the Web that match the style of the character on the show. The author has also recently been posting some great DIY jewelry and makeup tutorials, which can apply fairly easy to everyday life.

Home of Thrones is a brand new find, and is a home decor blog.  The author finds real-life architecture and nature shots that could be taken right out of the books and series.  I find it incredibly thoughtful and some of the beautiful  images the author finds are such nice distraction during the day.

Products:

Dothraki Rings by Linda Munequita . I love these rings, imprinted outside and inside with the pet names and symbols Khal Drogo and Khaleesi have for one another.

Winter is Coming T-shirt by Jerry Amsterdam. A simpler way to show your nerdiness, this T-shirt is emblazoned with the motto and logo of House Stark.

Winter is Coming Cuff Bracelet by HandStampLane.  For a slightly more fashionable twist on the Stark motto, you can pick up this silver cuff.

House Lannister Jewelry Box by Cdscrafting. I thought this was a really gorgeous jewelry box period, nevermind that its inspired by the Lannisters. It’s emblazoned with the Lannister sigil and even looks like it could have come from the time period.

Paper Boutonniere by Homonymic. I’m a big fan of anything made out of book pages, and just fell in love with this pretty yet simple boutonniere. It would be perfect for a geek love wedding.

Horntail Dragon Ring by Kilroy’s Attic. I wish I had a slightly more daring fashion sense; this ring is pretty kick ass.  Maybe if it was just a little bit smaller…

If you poke around Etsy, there is no shortage of clothes, jewelry and other trinkets all themed from the show. For those in the know, it’s like winter is coming…but just for your wallet!
