Seeking a Craftier RSS

If I had all the time in the world, I would have no problem reading craft and design blogs all day, every day.  There are so many good ones, I find myself actually overwhelmed by them and don’t add them to my RSS for fear of not getting to them all rather than feeling guilty about it. (Here’s a good story on that idea…it comforted me to know I wasn’t alone!)

However, in taking a look at my Reader, I’m feeling like I need to get over it. Here is my current list – mostly built on recommendations offered through Google.

Red White and Blue Desserts for 4th of July

Can you believe the 4th of July is nearly here? Where did the year go? I hope that you all have fun plans with friends and family – I will be heading to DC to see my parents and cousins, so I’m definitely looking forward to some family fun.  My parents will host the BBQ, and of course, my mind is already reeling with things I can suggest to add to our menu. Today I came across Martha Stewart’s slideshow of red, white and blue desserts – perfect for any 4th of July BBQ or party.  Since I don’t have the biggest sweet tooth, I love that so many of her ideas incorporate fresh fruit!  Check out the link for some tasty recipes, and here’s a few of my favs, courtesy of Martha Stewart:

I'm definitely going to give these Cheesecake Squares a whirl! How cute!

Quick Weeknight Spaghetti Sauce with Fresh Herbs

For those of you who have been following my garden, here’s the update: it’s growing! Who would have thought?! Well, all except for the jalapeno, which I eventually uprooted and threw out. I’m not quite sure what happened to that

Basil, Oregano, Sage

plant – it almost looked as if a spider made it its home.  But the herbs – they have been superstars! Ever since I planted garlic next to the basil to take care of the bug issue (thanks, Katie!) my basil has grown nice and tall, and my oregano practically reaches the sky! Last week, I clipped a bit from each, and a few leaves from my sage plant, and whipped up a quick weeknight tomato sauce using only what I had in the house to accompany the ravioli I found in the freezer.  How’s that for being cost efficient?

The fresh herbs were incredible in the sauce.  My BF ate it by the cupful, so I assume he liked it as well.  Here’s the recipe for my fresh herb pasta sauce that’s easy enough to whip up on a weeknight: [Read more...]

Dear San Francisco,

Thank you for letting me visit your city.  But I wish you would have told me to bring a coat and closed-toe shoes. Love, Erin.

I’ll have a much more lengthy recap in a few days, along with a few suggestions of things to do, should you be planning a trip here, but here’s my two favorite parts of my trip so far:  Enjoying some wine with good friends and finding a restaurant with the BEST NAME EVER.  It says it all.

Want to Make Your Own Wine?

One of our favorite contributors, Erik, shared the best piece of news with me this morning that I’ve heard in a long time.  You can make your own wine in Brooklyn.  Oh yes – you did not read that wrong.  DIY-wine.  In Brooklyn. Ah-mazing.  Think this is as good of an idea as I do? Check out The Brooklyn Winery’s website for information on their winemaking packages.

Have you ever made your own wine or other alcohol? How did it turn out?

Behold the power of social media…

We love you, Frank Bruni.

Pretty sure Erin can die happy now.

Caprese Pasta

Yummy caprese pasta.

Several weeks ago, one of our favorite bloggers, Jordan Reid of Ramshackle Glam, posted a recipe for Caprese Pasta, promising it was a simplistic and delicious dish for a hot summer evening.  Needless to say, we were intrigued.  A couple of days later, when a co-worker asked us over for an evening of wine and food — offering to buy the ingredients if we cooked them — we immediately thought of the recipe because less time cooking is more time drinking.  (Regular readers of this blog understand the importance of this ratio to Erin and me.) Best of all, I was excused from cooking and prep duties on account that I had to take pictures, meaning Erin did all the heavy lifting and I just had to sit down and eat.  (Erin, for reasons unknown sometimes, is still my friend.)

But I digress. As it turns out, the pasta is so easy and so delicious, it actually made me sad that we hadn’t discovered it before!  Best of all, we made so much of it, there were a ton of leftovers and I was voted the one able to take them home (again, lucky evening for me.)  After sitting overnight in the fridge, the pasta was even better the next day because the basil and tomatoes marinated together.  All this is to say, do yourself a favor and head on over to Ramshackle Glam to grab the recipe – but warning: cravings will now begin on a regular basis.

Make Your Own Embellished T-Shirt

I absolutely love all of the cute embellished T-shirts we’re seeing this season.  In my book, there’s nothing more comfortable than a soft cotton T-shirt, which is only made better when it’s cute enough to pair with a skirt for work or to dress up a pair of jeans for happy hour.  But the price tag can be more than a little disheartening. So what’s a girl to do? Make it myself, of course!  When you make it yourself, not only can you customize the shirt to make it exactly what I want, but you can also do it for about a quarter of the price you’ll see in a store.

A few weeks ago at the JCrew outlet they had their Favorite T’s on sale for $7.99.  Bingo! Their T’s are thick, soft cotton and wash and wear really well, season after season. I picked up a few, including a plain white V-Neck.  In my mind I envisioned something really girly that I could wear under a suit or with few of my summer skirts.   I saw a few shirts that used grosgrain ribbon, so I decided to give it a whirl.

I went to Michaels, and picked up some grey and light pink ribbon – I love this color combo; it reminds me of aerobics gear from the early ‘80s.  The vision in my head was of the ribbon cascading down one side – subtle enough to just peak out under my new navy suit jacket or favorite pink Jackie cardigan.
